Ben Fawcett, Edinburgh |
It all began for Ben at the now defunct Bogle & Belcher in Montrose, Scotland. The owner moulded Ben’s palate to all things French and Italian, plus a healthy cynicism for industrial wine – but that’s another story.
Ben remains staunchly European to this day, and not only his palate! Favourite wines tend to be a creamy serious Chardonnay, anything from Saumaize-Michelin or on special occasions Henri Boillot. Another favourite is Pichler-Krutzler Pinot Blanc. Reds are Italian on the whole: anything from Tuscany, like Sanguineto’s Rosso, and northwards.
Summer holidays always include a winery visit or two. Discovering the steepness of Stella di Campalto’s Montalcino vineyards, the age of Tritium’s cellars in Rioja, and discussing the merits of coalition governance with Giampaolo Tabarrini are three particular highlights to date.
Edinburgh based, Ben joined Raeburn in 2015. Along with cycling, cooking and the occasional Munro ascent, he is determined to make learning both Italian and Spanish a future perfect pastime.
Richard Rotti, London |
For 25 years Richard Rotti was entrenched at Annabel’s, buying and training for the group, initially with consultant Harry Waugh. It was the era of abundant ancient bottles. The role swelled in 2007 after the merger with Caprice Holdings. After countless buying trips across France and Italy, scenic highlights remain visits to the Bekaa valley and Santorini.
Carrying Piemonte genes, he is bilingual in English and Italian: the country’s wines are his passion and speciality, along with everything Riesling.
He started at high street chain The Victoria Wine Co., before quickly moving on to the more pleasant surroundings of royal warrant holders Findlater, Mackie & Todd for five years, retailer and mail order specialist of classic wines.
A fanatical tennis enthusiast, RR lives in SW London, though the countryside beckons. Wangled out of a far too early retirement by Zubair, he joined Raeburn in 2019.
David Harvey, London |
David’s field is fine wine made with respect for mother nature, rather than despite Her. In other words, a place where excellence and ethics might meet. He is especially interested in innovations in carbon management, cooperage, closures and glassware, final frontier elements of the wine world.
David started at Harvey’s of Bristol in 1993. Within 18 months he had tasted 30 vintages of Latour back to 1919, the 1st growths in 1959 and 1961, Cockburn’s Vintage Port back to from 1927 thru to the 1991 single quinta components, had taken his first WSET exams. Since when, he (almost) never looked back.
Over the next decade he made it his business to taste the great wines of the world, travel the major European & Californian wine regions. Wine buying positions included 36 On The Quay, The Balmoral Hotel, Cliveden, Midsummer House.
In 2004 he worked for Cornelissen on Mt.Etna. He wrote the Brut Nature column for The World of Fine Wine magazine for three years, and contributed to recent editions of The Oxford Companion to Wine. He publishes a history of ethical wine production. David joined Raeburn in 2010, opening the London Office.
Outwith wine & spirits, he is invariably to be found with his family, humidor, library, jam-pan, turntable, yoga mat.
